UMS Geography Student Wins in the 2017 University Battle Mapping Event

Space Time, Faculty of Geography, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) emerged as the 1st place winner in the Open Street Map (OSM) event which is a world mapping project at the University Battle Mapping (UBM) level for students from various universities in Indonesia organized by the Humanitarian Open Street Map Team. (HOT) Indonesia. In the event that was attended for the first time, UMS succeeded in eliminating 11 prestigious universities in Indonesia. The 11 universities included the Bandung Technical Institute (ITB) as the second winner, Manado State University (Unima) in third place. And Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is in fourth place.

The UMS team consisting of three seventh semester students of the UMS Faculty of Geography namely Bruce Maldy, Mukhlis Akbar, and Irfandi Fauzi, competed in a competition titled University Battle Mapping 2017 organized by the Humanitarian Open Street Map Team (HOT) Indonesia, October 2-16 November 2017. “We didn’t expect our team to conquer 11 giant universities in Indonesia,” said Bruce Maldy, his nickname to reporters, at the UMS Campus.

In this event, ITB had to be satisfied with the second position even though there was tough competition with the UMS Team during the competition period. This is because the UMS Team was able to achieve the highest score. Bruce revealed that his team managed to score quite high compared to the others. At the time of inputting the mapping, his team managed to obtain 61,718 objects. Meanwhile, ITB only has 46,982 objects. And Unima got 38,698 objects.

“A few days we had competition and the results were the same as ITB. Alhamdulillah, thanks to our persistence and consistency. We are the champions,” said Bruce.

In the competition, Bruce said, his team was given a week to input object data. His team took the scope of Solo City. On the first day, input 10 thousand objects. Whereas other campuses only have 3-4 thousand objects. Since then until the next week, the team will continue to try so as not to be defeated by other campuses. The second day and so on input 16-20 thousand objects. Until finally able to surpass all of them.

The period of a week is relatively short, but during those seven days they experienced many ups and downs. Often they misunderstand and do not talk to each other. Luckily, their shared ambition to become a winner can lower the egos of the three. “We want to win and make UMS proud. That’s our vision. But every time there is a fight, there is always someone who loses,” said Bruce.

This victory, according to Bruce, proves that UMS has scored a dream team as the first champion capable of defeating 11 giant universities in Indonesia. “Our curriculum can compete at the national level with state universities in Indonesia. An indicator of a good curriculum is that it can equip students to compete at the national level. This is something we should be grateful for,” he said.

Behind this victory, the UMS Team also pinned a noble goal. The reason is that in addition to pursuing the title of champion, Bruce et al. hope that the inputted data can be used as a reference by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) in disaster management. “Disasters are a problem for all of us, mapping is our way of helping,” he concluded (Source: http://ums.ac.id)
