The 5th International Conference of Geography and Disaster Management (ICGDM) was recently held by the Faculty of Geography from Tuesday to Thursday (December 5th to 7th, 2023). The event, conducted virtually, centered around the theme “Exploring Sustainable Solutions for Regional Development in Tropical Geographies: Unveiling the Potential, Embracing the Challenges.”
Distinguished keynote speakers contributing to this annual conference included Professor Christopher Gomez from Kobe University, Japan, Dr. Nawaz M Mian from the National University of Singapore, Singapore, and Dr. Maxim Samson from DePaul University, United States.
In addition to the main speakers, several invited presenters were welcomed to provide diverse perspectives at ICGDM 2023. Among them were Dr. Mukhamad Ngainul Malawani, M.Sc. from Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia, Esagu Calvin, M.A. from Kyambogo University, Uganda, Dr. Edy Trihatmoko, Member of the Impact 2050 Team from the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom (ROSATOM), Russia, Hendy Fatchurohman, M.Sc. from University College London, England, and Muhammad Aufaristama, Ph.D. from the University of Twente, Netherlands.
Dean of the Faculty of Geography, Jumadi, Ph.D., elucidated, “This conference serves as a platform to delve into appropriate solutions related to the development of tropical regions.”
Over a hundred active presenters, including students, faculty, and scholars from both domestic and international institutions, participated in the conference. They presented a myriad of research topics covering Physical Geography, Human Geography, Information Technology Application in Geography, and Natural Disasters.
ICGDM 2023 acknowledged the outstanding contributions of presenters, with notable awards such as “The Most Attractive Presenter” awarded to Hamza Ait Zamzami for the article titled “Tourism Investment And Land-Use Change In The Northern Piedmont Of The Western High Atlas (1989-2022)” and “The Best Presenter” awarded to Firda Maftukhakh Hilmya Nada for the article “The Potential Of Community Forest Development Through Agroforestry Pattern Of Medicinal Plants On Marginal Land In Lombok Tengah, Indonesia.”
Furthermore, awards were granted to “The Best Student Presenter” in several categories, including Track: Physical Geography awarded to Yunan Akhmad Isnanto for the article “Multitemporal Analysis of the Relationship Between Vegetation Density and Built Land on the Urban Heat Island Phenomenon in Cirebon City,” Track: Human Geography awarded to Syafa Kusumawardani for the article “Relationship of Road Infrastructure to Economic Inequality in Central Java,” Track: Information Technology Application in Geography awarded to Alvi Kurnia Sari for the article “Estimation of The Number of Oil Palm Trees With Oil Palm Ecognition and SAGA GIS based on UAV imagery (Case Study: Dumai, Riau),” and Track: Natural Disaster awarded to Hammam Muhammad Amrullah for the article “Multi-Temporal Analysis of Urban Heat Island Phenomenon Distribution in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (2018-2022) Using ArcGIS Story Map.”
Additionally, the results of the International Student Poster Competition were announced during the conference, with the first prize awarded to Adityo Wicaksono, the second prize to Vito Pratama Yudha, the third prize to Aprilia Kuswanti, and the Favorite prize to Elisa Dewi Andita. (*)
